12 May 2022: Fundsmith’s founder and Chief Executive, Terry Smith, and Fundsmith Equity Fund have been recognised with award wins by City A.M. and Morningstar, respectively.

City A.M. Awards 2022

Terry Smith has been named City A.M.’s investor of the year. After a two and half year break, the gala awards dinner returned and was held for the first time in the Guildhall, in the heart of the City of London. The awards recognise the best of the Square Mile, Canary Wharf and London’s business community.

City A.M. hailed the City’s “resilience” in the face of unprecedented challenges and on the investor of the year award commented, “Investors have had a rough old time of it in the last year, navigating global, political and economic shifts like never before. But even in a tough environment there are gains to be had. It’s those investors that still raise the eyebrows of City professionals in admiration.”

Morningstar Awards For Investing Excellence

Fundsmith Equity Fund was recognised by independent investment research company Morningstar in its annual Morningstar Awards For Investing Excellence 2022. The fund was crowned the Best Global Equity Fund in Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and South Africa.

The awards are designed to recognise the industry's top-notch fund offerings and investor-friendly firms. According to Morningstar, the winners “demonstrate the value of a solid long-term investment strategy at a time when domestic and international markets battled turbulent macro-economic and political headwinds”.

Morningstar selects the finalists using a quantitative methodology with a qualitative overlay that considers the one-, three- and five-year performance history of all eligible funds, and adjusts returns for risk using Morningstar Risk, a measure that imposes a higher penalty for downside variation in a fund’s return than it does for upside volatility. For the full Morningstar Awards methodology, please click here.

Fundsmith Equity Fund

Since inception to the end of April 2022, the Fundsmith Equity Fund T Class Accumulation Shares have delivered a compound return of 16.8% p.a. and a total return of 496.4% (net of fees), outperforming the MSCI World Index (GBP, net) by 4.9 percentage points and 233.3 percentage points, respectively.

Terry Smith, Founder and Chief Executive of Fundsmith, said:

“I am delighted to have been named City AM’s investor of the year and that Fundsmith Equity has yet again been named Morningstar’s best global equity fund in its prestigious awards in so many European countries, as well as in South Africa. This is testament to our goal of achieving superior returns over the long-term at a reasonable cost.”
